Domain Name Registration

A domain name is the name by which one is known on the Internet, in a similar manner as one has a postal address (see below for a brief explanation on how it works.

Having your own domain name personalises your website and your e-mails.

There are several top domain names available (see below for explanation). The selection of the top domain should be made on the criteria of relevancy to the activity displayed in the web site. Some are readily available.

For example:

  • Commerce: .biz, .com, .co.uk, .eu.com, .gb.com, .uk.com,
  • Personal: .name, .me.uk,
  • Information: .info, .tv
  • Internet: .net, .gb.net, .uk.net
  • Official body: .org, .org.uk
  • European: .eu

Please note that domain names are not deemed to be successfully registered until they appear in the relevant whois database of the top level domain name registrar.

Domain AreasThe Domain Name System is what allows communication on the Internet. It is administered by giving different groups responsibility for subsets of the name. Each level in this system is called a domain. The end name, reading from right to left, is hosted on a computer called a server; this server has the name of the end domain.

An analogy with which we are familiar is our postal address; reading the address on an envelope from bottom to top we have country, city, street, number and finally the recipient's name; written in the Domain Name System it would read "recipent.number.street.city.country"
